The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo held on July 23rd a Meeting on the Japan-U.S. Cooperation in the sector of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.. Taking this occasion, a new joint initiative between private institutions in Japan and the U.S. was presented, and an agreement to establish a consortium for this initiative was signed.
1. METI and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo with the participation of private-sector representatives, since February this year, have met twice to exchange views on Japan-U.S. cooperation on innovation and entrepreneurship. ,. In May this year, METI and the U.S. Department of State launched the U.S.-Japan Dialogue to Promote Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Job Creation and convened its first meeting.

2. In the context of these discussions, the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) and the U.S.-based Kauffman Fellows Program (KFP) have agreed to establish a consortium called the Cross Pacific Innovation Network Initiative (CPIN) as a framework to promote open innovation by making use of on both countries’ strengths.
3. At today’s meeting, the establishment of a new consortium was presented and members exchanged views. The meeting was followed by the signing of an agreement to establish the consortium by the two parties in the presence of METI Minister Masayuki Naoshima, METI Senior Vice Minister Teruhiko Mashiko, and U.S. Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos.

4. METI hopes that this joint initiative will spur the promotion of ventures and innovation through partnership between Japanese and U.S. companies.
