A Japan Initiative Mission to Explore Export Markets of Infrastructure and Advanced Systems in the South America “for the First Time” in the Space Industry

In the space field as well, emerging countries that have been continuing economic development will become promising markets for Japan in the future. Especially in the South America regions, the development and the use of space equipment have been often undertaken through joint projects with foreign governments. In response, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will dispatch a mission to explain Japanese space system products/services and research the needs of counterparty countries. Through these efforts, METI will push forward with the overseas development of Japan’s space industry and contribute to exports of infrastructure and advanced systems.

1. Background

In recent years, the use of the space is expanding globally, including emerging countries, causing intensified competition among countries to find space industry markets in emerging countries. In the South America, Brazil has developed space satellites jointly with China and is also considering joint development with Germany. Argentina has extensive experiences in developing/manufacturing the space-related equipment following Brazil and is much more likely to promote space projects through international cooperation. Peru also has experiences in the use of Japan’s satellite data and may be a promising country for Japanese companies to initiate their business activities.

This is a first-time mission across the whole area of industry after the Subcommittee on Infrastructure and Advanced Systems Strategy, the Industrial Structure Council was established.

2. Dispatching a mission

METI leads the mission (headed by Tomonori Nishimura, Senior Vice President, NEC Corporation) and will visit Brazil, Argentina and Peru from August 23 to September 2. This is a challenging mission in the space field that is sent to the South America jointly by government and private sectors for the first time.

3. Purpose of the mission

In those countries we visit, the mission explains Japanese space system products/services to government organizations and private companies and researches the needs of the countries.
