METI and MLIT organize “Symposium on EV/PHV-Friendly Communities”
－METI and MLIT to hold first joint symposium on building communities that proactively utilize EVs (electric vehicles) and PHVs (plug-in hybrid vehicles)－
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) are separately conducting projects designed to promote widespread use of EVs and PHVs. To facilitate nationwide dissemination of results achieved so far, the two ministries will jointly hold the “Symposium on EV/PHV-Friendly Communities” at the Kyoto International Conference Center on Friday, February 4, 2011.
1. Background to the symposium
In order to realize a low-carbon society and improve our environment in the automotive transport sector through emissions controls, it is essential to encourage broad use of EVs and PHVs, which are transformed into energy-efficient, zero-emissions vehicles when running on electric power.
METI will select a number of model “EV & PHV Towns,” whose local governments proactively work to expand use of EVs and PHVs, and develop a model to popularize the vehicles nationwide using the results obtained from the efforts of the model towns.
MLIT intends to promote the creation of communities using environment-friendly vehicles (electric-powered transit buses, EVs, ultra-mini mobility vehicles), and is conducting demonstration projects in 16 areas across the country in order to study how to address and resolve issues involved in the introduction of environment-friendly vehicles, as well as the design of urban transport facilities.
METI and MLIT will organize a joint symposium under the theme of “EV/PHV-friendly communities” in order to disseminate nationwide the results achieved to date by the METI EV & PHV Town project, and the MLIT-led town development project using environment-friendly vehicles.
This symposium the first-ever joint symposium on this theme, and comprises one facet of the two ministries’ separate efforts to achieve organic collaboration and information sharing in the context of popularization of EVs and PHVs.
