Announcement of the winners of METI Minister Award, etc. of Green IT Award 2008

The Energy Saving Server “ECO CENTER” of NEC Corporation and the “Construction and Operation of Air Conditioning System at Sony City Building” of Sony Corporation and Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. won METI Minister Award

The “Green IT Award” was established this fiscal year to further foster the Green IT Initiative through “savings in IT-related energy consumption” and “energy conservation through the use of IT. Following strict examination, the review board selected winners of the Green IT Award 2008 including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Minister Award and the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau Director-General Award.

2. Overview of the Green IT Award
The Green IT Promotion Council launched the Green IT Award this fiscal year to further foster savings in IT-related energy consumption and energy conservation through the use of IT, which both will contribute toward the construction of a society that can simultaneously achieve environmental conservation and economic growth and which will both serve as two pillars of the Green IT Initiative, which includes a method to evaluate savings in energy consumption. For this purpose, the Green IT Award will be awarded to a company that achieved energy conservation through the development and dissemination of an IT device, software or services/solutions utilizing such devices or software (hereinafter referred to as “IT devices, etc.”) or through the use of IT device, etc.

Winners of the “Green IT Award 2008”
A total of 32 applications were submitted to two categories: (1) savings in IT-related energy consumption and (2) energy conservation through the use of IT. A total of 12 IT device, etc. were selected as winners of the Green IT Award 2008. There are six winners in each category including one winner of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, one winner of the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau Director-General Award, one winner of the Green IT Promotion Council Chairman Award, and three winners of the Review Board Special Award.

      

(1) Savings in IT-related energy consumption
e.g. Data centers (e.g. servers, storage, software, facility management), networks, devices and systems such as displays, and devices and technology related to them

(2) Energy conservation through the use of IT
e.g. IT solutions for households and corporate use, new services utilizing IT, efforts within a company, efforts among companies
