On December 4, the Japan Data Center Council was established as an alliance of relevant parties in industry, academia and government and its inaugural meeting was held. Its aim is to cope with the explosive increase in the amount of information handled in the economy and society and to improve the international competitiveness of the Japanese data center business.
1. The data center business is playing an increasingly important role in society, which faces an exponential growth in the amount of information to handle as social dependence on the Internet increases. Its importance has been underscored, for example, by the recent trend toward adopting cloud computing, in which companies do not own their own IT resources such as hardware and software and only use them over the Internet as needed.
2. From this perspective, the Japan Data Center Council (JDCC) was established and its inaugural meeting was held on December 4. The JDCC will service as a forum for cooperation among industry, academia and government through which data center businesses and related companies join forces across corporate boundaries to tackle problems associated with data centers and strengthen their competitiveness.
3. Developing and reinforcing the domestic data center business is urgent and essential for Japan and is directly related to the competitive base of the entire country. To address the international problem of soaring power consumption by data centers, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is promoting the “Green Cloud Computing Project.”
4. In cooperation with the newly established organization JDCC, METI will formulate policies to tackle data center-related problems. With respect to energy conservation at data centers, in particular, METI will work in coordination with relevant organizations in Japan, such as JDCC, and the Green IT Promotion Council (founded on February 1, 2008, with the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association serving as the secretariat), as well as those overseas.
