Establishment of the Study Group on Solar System Industry Strategy - A study group to discuss future directions of the industry for enhancing the competitiveness of solar power generation

With the aim of maintaining and strengthening the competitiveness of the solar cell industry, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) today set up the Study Group on Solar System Industry Strategy (provisional name). The group will discuss future directions of the industry in light of the national energy policy as well as industrial strategy.

1. Solar power generation is an essential domestic energy source for Japan, a country with a low degree of energy self-sufficiency, because it has a particularly high potential for installation compared with other renewable energy sources and it can help Japan diversify energy sources and combat global warming.

2. For Japan, the solar cell industry is crucial to its industrial policy because it involves many supporting industries and is therefore expected to play an important role in the future of Japan’s industry.

3. With the aim of maintaining and strengthening the competitiveness of the solar cell industry, METI set up the Study Group on Solar System Industry Strategy. This group will discuss future directions of the industry in light of the national energy policy as well as industrial strategy.
