Statement about the agreement of a Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi Corporation and INCJ to buy United Utilities Australia by Minister Naoshima

1. A consortium led by Mitsubishi Corporation and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) agreed to buy United Utilities Australia Pty Limited, Australia’s major water treatment company.

2. I believe that this success in winning the bid is highly significant for Japan in that it is a pioneering event in which Japanese companies have fulfilled their goal of entering the global market of water infrastructure operation and management with the full capital participation of INCJ. The event is also noteworthy in terms of expanding the export of infrastructure systems, which is a key to Japan’s New Growth Strategy.

3. I understand that the successful bid was a result of not only the effort of the consortium members—Mitsubishi Corporation, INCJ, JGC Corporation and Manila Water Company, Inc.—but also the national-level commitment to the project, including full cooperation promised by the Bureau of Waterworks of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. I hope that the project will be implemented steadily and will lead to further international business opportunities.

4. The government has been fully supportive, as demonstrated by the capital participation of INCJ, and will continue to provide any possible aid for the project.
