Minister Motegi’s Speech at the Joint Press Conference with the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources

October 11, 2013

  • I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Honorable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, and members of the Federal Government of Canada for making time to be here today. I am very delighted that Minister Oliver and I were able to meet and also sign the statement here in this beautiful city of Vancouver.
  • Canada is the world’s fifth largest producer of natural gas, with the potential to become even larger through the production of shale gas and LNG. Currently, there are several LNG projects under development in the Province of British Columbia that involve Japanese firms. I have high hopes for the competitive supply of LNG from Canada, one of Japan’s long-term allies.
  • Under such circumstances, it is wonderful news that both of our Prime Ministers agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation in the energy sector during the Japan-Canada Summit held on September 24th.
  • Today’s bilateral meeting was held in line with the agreement between the Prime Ministers. Minister Oliver and I agreed that we should cooperate to realize LNG exports from Canada to Japan and exchanged opinions on how to solve issues such as export permits, expeditious processing of permits and licenses, and labor supply issues. Based on the Statement on Oil and Gas Cooperation, which we just signed, we will begin policy dialogues as soon as possible to solve these issues.
  • I will make full efforts together with Minister Oliver to tackle the issues one by one and to make sure that the shale gas from Canada will cross the Rocky Mountains, travel across the Pacific and land in Japan. At the same time, I strongly hope that the LNG imports from Canada will enhance the bilateral relationship between Japan and Canada.
