Statement by Minister Yoichi Miyazawa on The Restart of Sendai Nuclear Power Station

November 7, 2014

  1. Concerning the restart of Sendai Nuclear Power Station operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) confirmed the station’s conformity with the new regulatory requirements. In response, on November 3, 2014, I had meetings with Governor Ito of Kagoshima Prefecture and Assembly Chairman Ikehata and other representatives from the Kagoshima Prefecture Assembly at which I had the opportunity to explain the government’s policy for advancing efforts toward restarting the power station.
  2. Today, Governor Ito stated that the prefecture understands the government’s policy to proceed with the restart of nuclear power generation. With this statement, Governor Ito joins the mayor of Satsumasendai City in indicating his understanding for the restart of operations at Sendai Nuclear Power Station. I would like to express my appreciation of all those involved in this significant decision, which is a big step towards the restart of this nuclear power station.
  3. Moving forward, the actual restart of the Sendai Nuclear Power Station will proceed only after the rigorous legal and regulatory processes which are required by NRA, including the approval of construction plan.
