Question-and-Answer Session

US import restriction measures on steel, etc.

Q: You held a teleconference with Mr. Lighthizer regarding the US import restriction measures. Are there any updates?
The US announced the renegotiation of the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Is Japan going to consider an FTA negotiation with the US?

A: I expressed both my deepest regret and a strong request for the exemption of Japanese products during the teleconference with Mr. Lighthizer. As this is currently under negotiation, I would like to refrain from mentioning any further details of discussion.
It is very important that Japan and the US lead regional rule-making based on the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region. Regarding the form of economic framework that is the most appropriate between Japan and the US and also Asia-Pacific countries and regions, I would expect that a constructive discussion will occur at the Japan-US Economic Dialogue between Deputy Prime Minister Aso and Vice President Mike Pence of the United States.
