For sustainable socio-economic activities new economic systems are needed that are in balance between the environment and economy. These systems must address the impending shortage of final landfill sites and the environmental impacts of hazardous substances associated with improper disposal, and offer appropriate responses to environmental and resource constraints such as the future depletion of resources. Thanks to the consolidation of more than 10 years of experience and policies related to reducing waste and promoting recycling since the Resource Recycling Promotion Law entered into effect in 1991 (later amended to Law for the Promotion of Utilization of Recyclable Resources), Japan's legislation has become quite systematic in its coverage of these issues. Besides this legislation, if we also consider the METI Recycling Guidelines, by product category and by industry, there are now policies in place for every type of waste. |
