Japan-Indonesia EPA Entered into force on Jul.1, 2008

Outline

Japan and Indonesia started negotiations in July 2005 and reached a broad agreement in November 2006. The leaders of both countries signed the EPA in August 2007, which came into force in July 2008.
In addition to the reduction and elimination of trade barriers, the Japan-Indonesia EPA has had various effects, including those on ensuring the integrity of the existing legal systems and the reasonable operation and transparency of each institution, and improving the investment environment. Furthermore, Indonesia has rich underground resources, such as natural gas and oil. Therefore, the EPA incorporates a chapter on energy and mineral resources. Indonesia is Japan's ninth largest trading partner (as of 2012), and the economic ties between the two countries are strong. Indonesia enbraces the largest population (approximately 238 million people) in ASEAN, where Japanese companies can gain priority access to the promising market. In conformity to the EPA, the two countries have cooperation activities in the manufacturing industry (on 27 projects in 14 sectors) and it is expected that the two countries will continue to strengthen their economic ties. In addition, 208 Indonesian candidates for nurses and care workers came to Japan in August 2008, followed by 362 candidates in fiscal 2009, and 116 candidates in fiscal 2010 under the EPA.
