Japan-India EPA Entered into force on Aug. 1, 2011

Outline

In August 2004, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the Minister of the Commerce and Industry and the Minister of Finance of India decided to start vice-ministerial level talks in consideration of the possibility of forging an EPA, and the first policy dialogue was held in April 2005. Furthermore, at the Japan-India Summit Meeting of November 2004, Japan and India agreed on establishing a joint study group to discuss the ideal state of reinforcing the economic relations between the two countries from a comprehensive viewpoint. The joint study group held four study meetings from July 2005 to June 2006. In consideration of the report of the joint study group, instructions were given at the Japan-India Summit Meeting of July 2006 to ministerial officials to make preparations for negotiations.
Japan and India started official negotiations in January 2007, reached a broad agreement at the Chief Negotiator Session in September 2010 and completed the negotiations at the Summit Meeting of October 25 of the same year. Then, Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara and Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma sighed the EPA on February 15, 2011, which came into force on August 1 of the same year.
India, which has the third largest economy in Asia, has witnessed remarkable economic growth in recent years. A further expansion of business opportunities, the further reinforcement of economic relations between the two countries, and a closer relationship between Japan and India in all fields are expected from the liberalization and facilitation of trade, promotion of investment, and the institutional development of related fields. As a result, India will be Japan's greatest economic partner.
