Japan-Malaysia EPA Entered into force on Jul. 13, 2006

Outline

Japan and Malaysia started negotiations in January 2004 and reached a broad agreement in May 2005. The leaders of both countries signed the EPA on December 13, 2005, which came into effect in July 2006.
A large number of Japanese companies have been conducting business in Malaysia, and the economic ties between the two countries are strong. Therefore, the implementation of the EPA between the two countries has an effect of promoting the smooth procurement and sales of parts and further expanding trade and investments between the two countries. To be specific, the elimination and reduction of tariffs has a great effect.
Furthermore, not only the development of investment rules and the liberalization of services but also the establishment of the Sub-Committee on Improvement of Business Environment as a framework enabling the public and private sectors of both countries to work on business environment improvements has had a significant impact on a large number of Japanese companies in Malaysia. Starting with the meeting in March 2007, the Sub-Committee held four meetings up until December 2010. The Sub-Committee on Improvement of Business Environment started discussing various problems faced by Japanese companies in Malaysia, some of which have been already solved, thus it has gained a high evaluation from industry. In addition, Sub-Committees have been held in the fields of rules of origin, trade in services, and cooperation. As above, the implementation of the EPA has been making progress.
