Japan-Peru EPA Entered into force on Mar. 1, 2012

Outline

At the Japan-Peru Summit Meeting of November 2008, the leaders of both countries decided to start EPA negotiations, which Peru had firmly requested, and three private study meetings were held from January to March 2009. With consideration of the report of the study meetings, the start of negotiations was decided at the Japan-Peru Summit Teleconference in April 2009. Japan and Peru held seven formal meetings and intermediate meetings from May 2009 to November 2010, completed all the negotiations in November 2010, and signed the EPA in June 2011, which was brought into force in March 1, 2012. Japan's major tax-imposed goods exported to Peru as of 2010 were passenger cars (9%), motorcycles (9%), and televisions (9%). As a result of the negotiations, Japan and Peru reached an agreement to eliminate the tariff on passenger cars in four to nine years, motorcycles in five to nine years, and televisions immediately. The EPA aimed at eliminating tariffs on 99% or more products on a round-trip trade basis within 10 years after the entry into force of the EPA.
