Japan-Philippines EPA Entered into force on Dec.11, 2008

Outline

Japan and the Philippines started negotiations in February 2004, and the leaders of both countries signed the EPA on September 9, 2006, which came into force in December 2008. This was the first bilateral EPA for the Philippines. This EPA aims to promote a comprehensive economic partnership between the two countries. For the purpose of developing the economic activities of both countries, the EPA is designed to allow the free movement of goods, people, services, and capital as well as promote the harmonization and clarification of systems to develop intellectual property, competition policies, and the business environment. Also, the EPA includes the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the fields of capacity building, trade and investment, information and communications technology, and small and medium-sized enterprises. Under the EPA, 310 candidates for Philippine nurses and care workers came to Japan in May 2009 and 128 candidates in 2010.
