JOINT STATEMENT FOR FIRST FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS OF THE JAPAN-SINGAPORE ECONOMIC AGREEMENT FOR A NEW AGE PARTNERSHIP (JSEPA)

1 February 2001

The first formal negotiation meeting for the Japan-Singapore Economic Agreement for a New Age Partnership (JSEPA) was held from 31 January to 1 February 2001 in Singapore. (A preparatory meeting held from 29 to 30 January preceded this.) Led by Chief Negotiators, Ambassadors Kazuo Asakai and Lim Chin Beng, the atmosphere of discussions was warm and friendly. Significant progress was made. Both sides strongly affirmed their commitment to conclude a substantial and mutually beneficial agreement no later than December 2001, as was decided by Prime Ministers Yoshiro Mori and Goh Chok Tong. Both sides also agreed to keep the momentum going and work expeditiously to bring the negotiations to a fruitful conclusion. The next formal negotiation meeting will be held in Tokyo in April. In the meantime, the preparatory teams will carry on with their discussions.
