JOINT STATEMENT FOR THE SECOND FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS OF THE JAPAN-SINGAPORE ECONOMIC AGREEMENT FOR A NEW AGE PARTNERSHIP (JSEPA)

27 April 2001

The second formal negotiations for the Japan-Singapore Economic Agreement for a New Age Partnership (JSEPA) was held from Tuesday, 24 April 2001, to Friday, 27 April 2001, in Tokyo.

Led by the Chief Negotiators, Ambassador Kazuo Asakai and Ambassador Lim Chin Beng, good progress was made. The atmosphere of discussions was constructive and friendly. Both sides discussed ways to further liberalise and facilitate bilateral trade and investment, as well as strengthen partnerships and linkages in various fields, under the JSEPA.

Japan and Singapore strongly reaffirmed their commitment to conclude a substantive and mutually beneficial agreement by the end of this year. Both sides also agreed to keep the momentum going and to build upon the work already done to bring the negotiations to a fruitful conclusion.

The next formal negotiation meeting will be held in August this year in Singapore. The discussions will continue intersessionally at the preparatory level.
