Mr. Taizo Takahashi has served as Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) since July 2018. As head of the agency, he oversees all areas of energy policy including developing Japan’s Strategic Energy Plan, assuring secure energy supply, regulating the electricity & gas sectors, as well as promoting renewable energy and conservation.
Mr. Takahashi previously served as Deputy Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. He managed budgets, personnel affairs, and policy evaluation at METI and was instrumental in planning, designing and implementing METI policies.
Prior to this, Mr. Takahashi served as Deputy Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, where he worked to create a new energy mix, enact system reforms, and facilitate the decommissioning and contaminated water management at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to accelerate the reconstruction of Fukushima Prefecture.
In his role as Personnel Division Director at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Mr. Takahashi’s successful planning and coordination were critical to mobilizing the organization’s early response to disaster-affected areas. In his subsequent role as Director-General of the Electricity and Gas Industry Department of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Mr. Takahashi led efforts to further nuclear policy development.
Since joining METI, Mr. Takahashi has assumed various posts including Executive Assistant to the Minister, Director of the Industrial Machinery Division, and Member of the Policy Planning Committee at the Policy Planning and Coordination Division of the Minister’s Secretariat.
Mr. Takahashi is a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law.
He was born on September 15, 1962 in Tokyo.
