Director-General for Policy Planning and Coordination
NARITA Tatsuji
Mr. Narita Tatsuji serves as the Director-General for Policy Planning and Coordination, Minister’s Secretariat, a senior leadership position at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Appointed in July 2024, Mr. Narita is responsible for the oversight and organization for planning, drafting, and coordinating policy initiatives under METI’s jurisdiction. In addition, Mr. Narita also serves as the Director-General for Economic Security Policy, supervising and coordinating policies to ensure Japan’s economic security.
Immediately prior to his current appointment, Mr. Narita spent five years drafting competition policy for digital platforms while working at the Secretariat of the Headquarters for Digital Market Competition under the Cabinet Secretariat.
Previously, Mr. Narita led efforts to formulate new public policies for the information technology sector, including the semiconductor industry, and produced a series of reports about digital transformation while leading the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau.
During a more than 30-year career at METI, Mr. Narita has held responsibilities across a diverse range of public policy areas. They include the relaxation of regulations governing Japan’s electricity industry, reorganizations of government ministries and agencies, promoting economic cooperation with ASEAN economies following the Asian financial crisis, developing economic growth strategies, and drafting economic counter-measures following the global financial crisis.
While serving in a senior role at the Industrial Revitalization Corporation of Japan, Mr. Narita helped revitalize struggling Japanese corporations. During his time at the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation, he contributed to the formulation of power supplier Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) First Comprehensive Special Business Plan.
Mr. Narita spent three years in the United States working as a special advisor at the New York office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
He graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law, and earned an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. He was born in Tokyo.
