Mr. Sago Tatsuya serves as Director-General, Kanto Bureau of Economy Trade and Industry. Appointed to this key role at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in July 2024, Mr. Sago heads the Kanto Bureau, which is responsible for the implementation of economic policy in eleven prefectures including the nation’s two most populous cities, Tokyo and Yokohama.

Mr. Sago started his career at METI in 1991 with a posting to the Industrial Structure Policy Division. During his long career at METI, Mr. Sago has served in a wide variety of roles, including in the resources and energy administration in areas such as nuclear power, distribution of petroleum products, introduction of renewable energy, and liberalization of the electricity market. He has also held senior roles in policy areas that include small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) promotion, revitalization of regional economy, retail and wholesale industries, and content industry. Specific policy measures directed by Mr. Sago include the liberalization of the electricity retail market for large-scale consumers, ensuring oil supply in the aftermath of the Kumamoto Earthquake, enacting laws to support the collaboration and technological development of SMEs, and monitoring electricity trading market.

Mr. Sago has secondment experience to Kyoto Prefecture and the Cabinet Office, where he was responsible for planning policies to revitalize the local economy and address local issues.

Immediately prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sago served as the Director of the Japan Finance Corporation (JFC), where he focused on the design of systems for policy finance, including support for launching businesses and startups, support for social businesses, as well as collaborative financing with private-sector financial institutions.

Mr. Sago graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Economics, and earned a master’s degree in international relations from Columbia University in the United States.
He was born on April 14, 1968, in Kanagawa Prefecture.
