Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry

Mr. Tada Akihiro has served as a Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) since July 2021. He supervises ministry affairs, including policy planning and formulation, as well as project implementation. He also leads several teams of officials supporting the Minister, State Ministers and Parliamentary Vice-Ministers.

Since joining METI, Mr. Tada has served in several senior posts in areas from environmental policy to SME policy. While serving as the Director of the Environmental Policy Division, he managed issues related to global warming ahead of COP 13 and the Hokkaido Toyako Summit. He also established a new financial guarantee system in response to the deterioration of cash flow to SMEs in his role as the Director of the Finance Division, SMEA.

In his previous role as Deputy Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Mr. Tada oversaw budgets, personnel affairs, and digital transformation at METI. Mr. Tada is instrumental in planning, designing and implementing METI’s policies in these areas.

When he served as Director General, Economic and Fiscal Management Cabinet Office, Mr. Tada oversaw key economic and fiscal policies under the leadership of the Prime Minister. He also served as the Director-General of METI’s Manufacturing Industries Bureau where he led business promotion policy for Japan’s manufacturing industries.

During his time as the Deputy Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), Mr. Tada managed nuclear energy policy and safety. This included the restarting of nuclear energy power plants in Japan and the disposal of radioactive waste. During his tenure as ANRE’s Director-General, Electricity and Gas Industry Department, Mr. Tada reformed energy policy, including the deregulation of the electricity and gas markets.

Mr. Tada is a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law. He earned a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

He was born in Tokyo on February 8, 1963.
