Director-General for Technology Policy Coordination and Industrial and Product Safety
YUMOTO Keiichi
Mr. Yumoto Keiichi serves as Director-General for Technology Policy Coordination and Industrial and Product, a senior leadership role at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Since assuming this role in July 2024, Mr. Yumoto oversees national policy for industrial and product safety and technology policy in Japan.
During a 30-year career at METI starting in 1994, Mr. Yumoto has served in a wide range of position with responsibilities for policy areas including energy policy, including electricity, oil, and natural gas, and environmental policy areas that include efforts to promote the circular economy as well as chemical management. Additionally, Mr. Yumoto has been actively involved in driving government reforms to address technological innovation and social changes. During his career, Mr. Yumoto has cultivated deep experience in several key industrial sectors, including chemicals, paper manufacturing, glass, and cement, driving government policy efforts to strengthen Japan’s industrial competitiveness, promote trade, drive countermeasures to address global warming policy, and promote innovation.
Previously, he served as the Director of the Nuclear Accident Response Office as well as the Director-General for Nuclear Accident Disaster Response. For these key assignments, Mr. Yumoto spent five years overseeing measures for decommissioning, contaminated water, and treated water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. He also contributed to crisis management planning and disaster preparedness.
Mr. Yumoto graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s School of Engineering, and earned a master’s degree in inorganic materials engineering from the institute’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering.
Mr. Yumoto was born on October 4, 1968, in Kanagawa Prefecture.
