METI to Host Three International Energy-related Conferences in Tokyo in the Autumn of 2019

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will host three international conferences in the field of energy in Tokyo from September 25 to 26, 2019. Two conferences in the fields of hydrogen and carbon recycling will be held at Hotel New Otani on September 25, while a conference in the field of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be held at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa on September 26.

As of September 2, the three conferences are expected to host over 2,080 people, including 19 ministerial-level governmental officials of participating countries and representatives of international organizations.

Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting 2019

Following on from the first meeting in 2018, the second Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting will bring together ministers of major hydrogen-related countries and representatives of major private companies from around the world. Participants will share information on the current efforts by participating countries related to the Tokyo Statement released at the previous meeting. In addition, the meeting will enrich discussions on future directions of policies for utilization of hydrogen on a global level, thereby aiming to accelerate efforts for worldwide dissemination of hydrogen power.

International Conference on Carbon Recycling 2019

The International Conference on Carbon Recycling is the first international conference which provides an occasion for people from the government, industry and academia sectors to collaboratively hold discussions toward the dissemination and expansion of a concept called “carbon recycling,” a system in which carbon dioxide, recognized as a source of carbon, is captured, utilized and recycled into a variety of carbon compounds. The conference will aim to promote innovations that contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emission to the air, to finding solutions to climate change-related issues and to securing stable supply sources for new resources. Moreover, the conference will confirm innovative efforts by participating countries, the latest information from these countries and potential for international collaboration, in order to encourage these sectors in participating countries to consolidate their networks.

LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2019

As the year of 2019 marks the 50th year since the milestone first introduction of LNG into Japan, the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2019, the eighth convening of the conference, will bring together the record-largest number of ministers of participating countries, attracting ever-greater attention. The demand for LNG is expected to grow three to four times by 2030, in particular, in Asia, while in the field of LNG supply, new LNG producers in certain regions, such as North America, Russia, Australia and Southeast Asia, are rising to the challenge of this growth in LNG demand. Aiming to encourage these LNG markets to expand, the conference will hold discussions not only on the importance of ensuring LNG security, but also on new investments and trading in LNG markets, which are measures for addressing environmental issues such as achieving low-carbonization,, and industry innovation trends, e.g., utilization of digital technology.
