Global Leaders to Discuss Their Visions for Carbon Neutrality at the NET ZERO Leaders Summit

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will host a series of online events called "NET ZERO Leaders Summit (Japan Business Conference 2021)," starting on July 28, 2021. The theme will be the worldwide challenge of achieving carbon neutrality.

Online Event Kicking off with a Forum Featuring Global Leaders

The NET ZERO Leaders Summit (Japan Business Conference 2021) will kick-off with a two-day online forum held on July 28 (Wed.) and July 29 (Thu.). This forum will feature keynote speeches and panel discussions by CEOs and leading figures from major companies and organizations around the world. They will discuss the challenging goal of achieving carbon neutrality, aimed at creating a positive cycle of economic growth and environmental protection.

The key to achieving carbon neutrality is technological innovation. During the first panel discussion, business executives will discuss the path for green innovation moving forward. Guest speakers will include leaders from Vestas Wind Systems (Denmark), which operates wind power systems all around the world, and Air Liquide (France), which operates a global industrial gas business and is also working on promoting the adoption of hydrogen energy.

The second panel discussion will feature financial institutions which will play an important role in supporting the development and application of technologies. The PRI (which promotes the UN's principles of responsible investment) and top management from megabanks (including the Bank of Brazil and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group) will discuss how financial institutions should provide assistance.

In emerging countries, the challenge is finding a balance between rapid economic growth and decarbonization. Participants in the third panel discussion will discuss a realistic and phased transition with energy-related companies in emerging countries, with speakers from Petronas (Malaysia), the Juhua Group (China), and ReNew Power (India).

In addition to the NET ZERO Leaders Summit, a wide variety of other programs are being planned and will be held in the future.
A Japan Technology Showcase will be set up in a virtual venue and present outstanding technology and services from 54 Japanese companies and local governments in key areas including "Energy and Solutions," "Manufacturing and Mobility," and "Smart Cities and Lifestyles." Participants will also be able to use avatars to communicate with each other and the exhibitors in real time.
