Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI): What It Is and How Companies Can Use It for Climate Change Disclosure

The Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI) is a new technologies inventory developed by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), to help companies make evidence-based analyses of GX technologies based on patent information. Released in June, GXTI also enables companies listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange New Market Segment to enhance the “quality and quantity” of their disclosure related to climate change as required under the June 2021 revision of Japan’s Corporate Governance Code.

Easier Search for Green Transformation Technologies Patent Documents

GXTI categorizes Green Transformation (GX) technologies such as Solar Power Generation, and Hydrogen Generation, into their own category of technology, accompanied by patent search formulae, which can be used for patent document searches.

Searching for patents related to a particular technology had previously been the domain of experienced patent search experts. The patent search formulae listed in GXTI make it much simpler to investigate how much technology exists worldwide relating to a particular GX technology.

Furthermore, by including your company name to a patent search formula, users can identify how many relevant patent applications have been filed by their company, disclosing this information in more objective way.

How to Search: A Step-by-Step Guide

The patent search formulae listed in GXTI can be used to search in various patent search databases. Even if your company does not have its own patent database, you can search **J-PlatPat外部リンク, which is an open and free database provided by the National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training (INPIT).
For example, to search for “Solar Power Generation”, you can copy the string of letters from GXTI (in this case, “H01L(31/04+51/42)/ip+H02S/ip+H02J7/35/ip” as shown in the cell O5 of the Excel file incl. Patent Search Formula) and paste it into the Logical Expression Input in the Patent/ Utility Model Search Screen, then press “Search”.

If you want to limit your search to a certain applicant (or a company), you can multiply the search formula and “XX (name of the company)/ap” as follows:
(ex.) [H01L(31/04+51/42)/ip+H02S/ip+H02J7/35/ip]*XX (name of the company)/ap

With GXTI, a company can objectively quantify their strengths in GX technology by quoting the number of their patent applications in each technology category.

Corporate Disclosure Applications

The JPO hopes that GXTI will become a useful common asset for companies to analyze GX technologies based on patent information. The JPO is calling for examples of patent information analysis or climate change related information disclosures based on GXTI searches. These case studies will be uploaded as soon as they are received and reviewed. In addition, the JPO plans to conduct a survey using GXTI and publish the results.
