Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Foreign AffairsThe Second Iraq-Japan Water Conference was Held

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) dispatched a mission consisting of members from the public and private sectors to Baghdad, the Republic of Iraq. On February 3, 2014, the governments of Japan and Iraq convened the second Iraq-Japan Water Conference in Baghdad with about 190 people attending from both countries, and confirmed that they will develop bilateral cooperation in the water field.

1. Outline of the results of the conference

Iraq outlined the current situation of water usage in the country and its scheduled water-related projects, while METI explained Japan’s water policies, and Japanese private enterprises made presentations regarding their water-related technologies.

In addition, both sides agreed to advance bilateral cooperation in the water field and they signed a joint press statement (see Appendix(PDF:184KB) PDF File), in which minutes of the conference were recorded.

Furthermore, a business-matching event was held for conducting face-to-face business talks among participating enterprises, succeeding in facilitating the entry of Japanese enterprises into the field of water in Iraq as well as encouraging collaboration between Japanese companies and Iraqi companies which have the potential to become local partners.

2. Outline of meetings with Iraq’s dignitaries

Japan had meetings with the Minister of Municipality and Public Works, Technical Director of the Ministry of Oil, Services and Construction Committee, and other officials.

As a representative of the mission, Mr. Shuzo Takada, Deputy Director-General, Manufacturing Industries Bureau of METI, introduced the fact that Japanese enterprises are highly interested in water-related businesses in Iraq and also asked for continued support for business activities of Japanese enterprises from the Minister of Municipality and Public Works. Following the introduction, each Japanese enterprise made a presentation concerning its advantageous technology.

Reference 1: Iraq-Japan Water Conference

Recently, many projects concerning improvement of water-related facilities are being considered in Iraq, and Japanese enterprises are highly motivated to participate in such projects. With this in mind, METI and the Iraqi government agreed to hold conferences to provide the Iraqi government and related enterprises with opportunities to introduce their initiatives to each other, aiming to further enhance Japan-Iraq cooperation in the field of water as well as to encourage Japanese enterprises to expand their businesses in Iraq, through collaboration between METI and related organizations. Based on this agreement, the first conference was held in Basra, Iraq in February, 2013.
