1. Summary of the National Maritime Award

Objective
In order to strongly promote maritime policies and realize Japan’s status as a maritime nation, it is indispensable to improve people’s understanding of the oceans. The Basic Act on Ocean Policy specifies that the state shall take necessary measures for educating and disseminating knowledge about the oceans.

For this purpose, in 2008, the government established the National Maritime Award to honor individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in awareness-raising activities, academic and research activities, industrial vitalization, and other efforts in a wide range of fields related to the ocean, including science and technology, fisheries, maritime affairs and the environment. By celebrating their contributions and introducing them to the public, we would like to provide the people with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the ocean as well as cultivate an awareness of the ocean among them.
