Parliamentary Vice Minister Isozaki Visited the U.K.

From July 13 to 17, 2014, Mr. Yoshihiko Isozaki, Parliamentary Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the U.K. to attend the Farnborough International Airshow,* the world’s largest aircraft-related exhibition, held in Farnborough, a suburb of London. Taking the opportunity of the show, he had a meeting with Mr. Philip Dunne, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology; delivered a speech at a joint reception held by the society of aerospace companies in Japan, the U.K. and other European countries; and visited the exhibitions presented by a number of global enterprises, particularly those by Japanese companies, aiming to enhance the cooperation between Japan and the U.K., as well as Japan and other European countries.

In addition, he visited a base at which Hitachi, Ltd. engages in train maintenance in the U.K., and a Rolls-Royce plc engine plant and exchanged views with the executives towards the enhancement of the economic relationship between Japan and the U.K.

*Note:
Farnborough International Airshow is the world’s largest aircraft show and is held every other year. It was held for the 49th time this year, and Mr. Isozaki is the first METI Parliamentary Vice Minister to visit the airshow.

1. Meeting with the U.K. Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology

Parliamentary Vice Minister Isozaki had a meeting with Mr. Philip Dunne, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology of the U.K. He highlighted that the Japan-U.K. Defence Equipment Cooperation, which is progressing on both sides, will be further deepened if both sides would enhance Japan-U.K. industrial cooperation. Following this talk, both sides exchanged views on the significance of promoting intergovernmental consultations and inter-industry dialogues.

In addition, concerning the joint study of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Protection), which is currently being conducted, both sides confirmed that the study was the first step toward the Defence Equipment Cooperation.

2. Delivering a speech at the joint reception held by the societies of aerospace companies in Japan, the U.K. and Europe

Parliamentary Vice Minister Isozaki delivered a speech at the joint reception and stressed the importance of cooperation between Japan, the U.K. and Europe in the civil aircraft market, which is expected to double in scale over the coming two decades. In addition, he expressed Japan’s view that the market will become an even larger growth industry.

3. Visiting the airshow exhibition and enterprises

At the airshow, Parliamentary Vice Minister Isozaki visited the exhibitions presented at the site by global companies, particularly those by Japanese enterprises, including Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation, the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (nine enterprises), and the Saitama Industrial Development Corporation (five enterprises).

He also visited Hitachi’s Ashford depot, a base at which the company performs maintenance on trains in the U.K., commissioned by the country and exchanged views with the company’s executives concerning the background of how the company successfully received orders for the railway business from the U.K. and other European countries, as well as the current situation and future efforts and challenges.

He also visited an engine plant in Derby, run by Rolls-Royce, a world-famous engine manufacturer at the same level as General Electric Company and Pratt & Whitney in the U.S. At the plant, engines for civil aircraft undergo final assembly. He exchanged views with the company’s executives concerning the current situation of and future potential for cooperation between the company and Japanese companies.
