The Fourth Asia Content Business Summit to be Held in Tokyo-Bringing the related public-private sectors in the content industry from 9 Asian countries and regions together-

Recent dramatic growth in Asian markets has been attracting Japan’s content industry’s attention. In light of this situation, on October 21 and 22, 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold an Asia Content Business Summit (ACBS) in Tokyo for the first time in three years.

On October 21, an open seminar will be held at Hotel Nikko Tokyo in Daiba, Minato Ward, Tokyo, bringing the related public-private sectors in the content industry from Asian regions together. At the seminar, participants will discuss the latest topics, including measures for encouraging the industry and trends in the market. It will be opened to the public, and METI wishes that people who are interested in such measures in Asia and in business expansion to other countries will participate.

In addition to the open seminar above, the ACBS will provide a private dialogue among related people from the governments and related organizations on October 22, and participants will discuss specific future approaches concerning the industry based on the results of the open seminar. The results of the dialogue will be publicized at a later date.

1. Outline of the event

In 2008 ACBS was decided to be established, aiming to raise and develop the content industry in Asia, and bring people from the related public-private sectors from Asian countries and regions together. At the meeting, participants present a variety of information, including measures for encouraging the industry, market information, and leading Asian companies’ trends in their overseas business expansion. In addition, the meeting provides an opportunity for participants to discuss potential approaches to addressing common challenges that Asian countries and regions are facing, including methods for distributing content across borders and anti-piracy measures. This fourth meeting will be held in Tokyo, following the first in Tokyo, the second in Thailand, and the third in Singapore.

At the open seminar of the fourth meeting, participants will discuss various issues focusing on two themes: [i] expanding and integrating content markets in Asian regions; and [ii] efforts for developing the content industry in Asian regions and countries. The seminar will be held with people from media and content enterprises that are leading nine Asian countries and regions, as well as those from governments and government-related organizations in the regions, attending. Participants will introduce enterprises’ latest trends and related technologies and also discuss approaches to the regions’ cooperation in encouraging the media and content industries. For details of the participating countries and regions, see the Japanese language press release.

Market Growth and GDP Growth of ACBS Countries

The meeting will aim to trigger promotion of exchange efforts and business expansion in the fields of media and content in Asian regions, thereby further advancing the development of Japan’s content business in other Asian countries.

In addition, the meeting will be held in collaboration with CoFesta (Japan International Contents Festival) 2014, which began in September 2014. Through this effort, METI will endeavor to further enhance Japan’s global communication ability so as to convey Japan’s content to other countries.

In particular, ACBS will closely collaborate with Japan Content Showcase (JCS) 2014 event, an international fair for movies, music, and animation that will start on October 21 (Tues.), 2014, the same date as that of the open seminar above. At session 4 of the ACBS, participants will discuss a theme titled “International cooperation in collaborative production and other efforts,” a subject closely related to the JCS. To enable JCS visitors to attend session 4, METI will hold the session at Hotel Grand Pacific Le Daiba, a site where the JCS seminars will be held.
