Joint Statement of the Fourth Asia Content Business Summit was Issued

On October 21 and 22, 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held the Asia Content Business Summit (ACBS) in Tokyo for the first time in three years.

In the summit, an open seminar on October 21 was held as well as closed dialogue on October 22 based on the results of discussions at the seminar the previous day with related people from the governments and organizations attending. As an achievement of the summit, participating countries agreed with a joint statement concerning the cooperation and collaboration among them to foster the content industry in the Asian region.

1. Outline of the joint statement

In order to further foster and develop the content industry in the Asian region, the member countries agreed with the initiatives for the future industry, concerning the issues focused on in discussions at the summit.

Note: The Fourth ACBS participating economies: Hong Kong, Japan, the ROK, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand (in alphabetical order).

They agreed to engage in various initiatives including the following:

  • To recognize the importance of cross-border content distribution and aim to alleviate regulations that can prevent promotions of content distribution;
  • To work together to fight against pervasive piracy; and
  • To examine ways of promoting international cooperation such as international co-productions.

On October 21, the open seminar consisting of various sessions was held, with about 40 people from governments and government-related organizations in the Asian region and the media content industry representing the region and 150 or more public participants attending. Participants made keen discussions concerning the cooperation, aiming toward the promotion of the media content industry in the region.

On October 22, the closed dialogue between government-related people was held. Participants discussed specific initiatives to be tackled for the future industry based on the achievements in the open seminar, and agreed with the joint statement.
