Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyJOGMEC and U.S. NETL Signed a MOU concerning Japan-U.S. Collaboration on Methane Hydrate

On November 6, 2014, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning Japan-U.S. collaboration on methane hydrate, with the presence of H.E. Mr. Yoichi Miyazawa, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and H.E. Ms. Caroline Bouvier Kennedy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Japan.

On November 6, 2014, JOGMEC and the NETL concluded the MOU concerning Japan-U.S. collaboration on methane hydrate. The signing was conducted in the presence of METI Minister Miyazawa and Ambassador Kennedy at the site of the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2014.

Both sides agreed to the MOU based on the Statement of Intent concerning methane hydrate development, which was concluded between the governments of Japan and the U.S. in 2008. Based on the MOU, JOGMEC and NTL will conduct joint research towards the realization of methane hydrate onshore production testing in Alaska, the U.S.

Scheduled site of the research: Northern part of Alaska, the U.S. (North Slope)
Details of the research:

  • Geological survey, including experimental drilling, and efforts for coordinating local people’s opinions
  • Production test, based on the results of the survey

Duration of validity of the MOU: About 5 years
