Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyEstablishment of a Committee for the Study of a Process Leading to Introduction of Bio Jet Fuel for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Tokyo

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will establish a process study committee composed of persons concerned for the purpose of clarifying problems to be considered and planning the future process to introduce bio jet fuel in preparation for realizing flights using bio jet fuel during the 2020 Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. METI will also hold the first meeting on July 7, 2015.

1. Outline and purpose

ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) have promoted the usage of bio jet fuel as a measure for reducing aviation greenhouse gas emissions for 2020 and later years, and Japanese airline companies are considering the introduction of this bio jet fuel.

In addition, domestic business operators have conducted research and development for the fuel, aiming at the establishment of production technology around 2025-2030 as their target.

In response to this movement, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and METI will confirm a future study system with persons concerned and establish a study committee for planning the future process to introduce bio jet fuel, while clarifying problems to be considered, with the aim of realizing flights using the fuel for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
