Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyMETI Will Begin a Preliminary Survey for the Basic Test Drilling Project Offshore Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will conduct a preliminary survey for the basic test drilling project in order to confirm the availability of petroleum and natural gas offshore Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures in August 2015. The basic test drilling project is to conduct trial drilling for resources in waters that have been regarded as promising ones as a result of exploration by the three-dimensional seismic survey ship named “Shigen,” which was launched by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in February 2008. Based on the results of the preliminary survey, METI will continue to coordinate with local entities concerned towards the trial drilling.

1. Outline of the Project

Drilling Site: approximately 140 kilometers offshore north of Yamaguchi Prefecture, approximately 130 kilometers offshore northwest of Shimane Prefecture
Period of Operations: August 2015 (preliminary survey)
Drilling Survey: from May to August 2016 (scheduled)
Contractors: INPEX CORPORATION (as project coordinator),
Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (as project manager)

2. Record of recent basic drilling projects funded by the national budget

  • the waters of Sado Nansei Oki off Niigata Prefecture from 2003 to 2004
  • the waters from Tokai Oki to Kumanonada off Aichi Prefecture from 2003 to 2004
  • the waters of Joetsu Kaikyu off Niigata Prefecture from 2012 to 2013
