Minister Hayashi Visits Indonesia

From November 22 through 25, 2015, Mr. Motoo Hayashi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Jakarta, Indonesia to make a courtesy call on H.E. Ir. H. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as to have meetings with H.E. Dr. Darmin Nasution, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Thomas T. Lembong, Minister of Trade of Indonesia, and H.E. Mr. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Also, Minister Hayashi attended gatherings including the Indonesia-Japan Business, Trade and Investment Partnership Symposium, organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the Symposium on Building National Resilience, organized by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), to share the importance of measures such as the promotion of business activities through collaboration between the public and private sectors in both countries.

1. Courtesy call on President Joko

  • Minister Hayashi made a courtesy call on President Joko to welcome Indonesia’s interest in participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement as well as to state that Japan would like to hold meaningful discussions with Indonesia in the future on the Agreement.
  • In addition, they exchanged opinions on the construction of a new port in east Jakarta for the expansion of investments and the enhancement of efficiency in logistics, and the further utilization of ERIA, which is an international organization for promoting economic integration in East Asia, particularly ASEAN countries.

  • Minister Hayashi had a meeting with Minister Darmin, and they held discussions in order to proceed with cooperation in taking measures such as the development of industrial human resources and support for SMEs for the promotion of “PROMOSI: Japan-Indonesia Investment and Export Promotion Initiative,” which had been agreed upon at the summit meeting held in March 2015.
  • In particular, Minister Hayashi stated that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) decided to support the development of human resources for advanced manufacturing by providing endowed chairs at 20 universities in the Asia region within the next three years, and they agreed to cooperate in order to effectively execute this project.
  • Furthermore, they held discussions on issues in the development of the trade and investment environment for Japanese companies. As for the construction of the new port in east Jakarta, from among such issues, they agreed to cooperate in the realization of its construction in light of its importance.

  • Minister Hayashi had a meeting with Minister of Trade Thomas, and they exchanged opinions on Indonesia’s potential participation in the TPP Agreement and the progress of the negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP),toward the realization of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP).
  • Minister Hayashi welcomed Indonesia’s expression of its interest in participating in the TPP Agreement as well as stating that if Indonesia decided to participate in the TPP Agreement, while preparing to meet the high level of standards required by the Agreement, it would significantly contribute to stability and prosperity in the Trans-Pacific Region. In response to this, Minister Thomas answered that the TPP Agreement would be a game changer.
  • Also, they held discussions on issues in the development of the trade and investment environments in Japan and Indonesia in order to further strengthen the economic relationship between both countries.

4. Meeting with Secretary-General of ASEAN Minh

  • Minister Hayashi had a meeting with Secretary-General Minh, and they affirmed the importance of strengthening the economic relationships between Japan and ASEAN countries. At the same time, they agreed that Japan and ASEAN would continue proceeding with their cooperation in taking measures including the development of quality infrastructure, the development of industrial human resources, and support for SMEs.

5. Attendance at gatherings including a seminar on the economy

  • Minister Hayashi attended the Indonesia-Japan Business, Trade and Investment Partnership Symposium, which was organized by JETRO, and explained the importance of realizing the FTAAP, developing quality infrastructure, and developing supporting industries in order to further enhance and strengthen the economic relationship between Japan and Indonesia.
  • Also, he participated in the Symposium on Building National Resilience, which was organized by ERIA, to emphasize the importance of energy security, improvements in value chain resilience, and technologies for enhancing resilience in a wide range of fields.
