Small and Medium Enterprise AgencySMEA Announces the Fourth Round of “Declarations of Support for Regional Specialties”– Promoting community-wide collective efforts–

The fourth round of “Declarations of Support for Regional Specialties” was announced in November and December 2015 by Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture, Fukaura-machi, Aomori Prefecture, Suttsu Town, Hokkaido Prefecture, Sunagawa City, Hokkaido Prefecture, and Numata Town, Hokkaido Prefecture.

1. Outline of Declarations of Support for Regional Specialties

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been encouraging municipalities to make “Declarations of Support for Regional Specialties” in order to realize increases in sales and employment in local communities and virtuous cycles in local economies by developing and strengthening regional brands through community-wide continuing efforts involving various businesses. A total of 19 municipalities including those that made announcements this time have made declarations.
* The term “regional specialties” refers to the “goods and services (or groups of them) that leverage regional resources.”

2. Description of the declarations of support announced this time

Declaration of support for Tsubame metal products, announced on November 1, 2015
[Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture]

In Tsubame City, which is a manufacturing city, this declaration of support aims to promote metal products such as “metal tableware (occidental type),” for which the city accounts for more than 90% of domestic production volume, technologies for such products, and the metal product industry.

Declaration of support for Seto Pottery – pottery made in Seto, a city famous for pottery, which has more than 1,000 years of history and tradition, announced on December 1, 2015
[Seto City, Aichi Prefecture]

In Seto City, which is one of the major pottery production areas in Japan, this declaration of support aims to promote Seto Novelties (such as dolls and accessories), which are produced utilizing the know-how gathered from the production of traditional Seto pottery.

Declaration of support for Tsuwano-guri no Sato (hometown of Tsuwano chestnuts), which brings history and culture to life, announced on December 3, 2015
[Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture]

This declaration of support aims to realize Tsuwano-guri no Sato, from which all the townspeople can receive benefit and enrichment in cooperation with the agricultural, commercial, and tourism industries.

Declaration of support for Fukaura Maguro Steak Rice Bowl – Tuna is not landed only in Oma Town! Fukaura-machi lands the most tuna in Aomori Prefecture! – announced on December 14, 2015
[Fukaura-machi, Aomori Prefecture]

A local specialty, the Fukaura Maguro Steak Rice Bowl which was started in Aomori Prefecture and slated as “A New Omotenashi”, has achieved total sales of 100,000 meals. This declaration of support is for this local gourmet specialty, which represents Fukaura-machi and utilizes only the best local produce

Declaration of support for Gourmet Food, Experience, and Health – a tourism program taking advantage of gifts from the sea and hot springs, announced on December 15, 2015
[Suttsu Town, Hokkaido Prefecture]

This declaration of support is to promote extended-stay tourism by promoting food produc1ed from a wealth of fishery resources and the Suttsu Onsen Yubetsu no Yu (hot springs), which have some of the best antioxidant potential of hot springs in Japan as well as historic buildings in the area.

Declaration of support for “Sweet Road, A Town’s Story in Which Flowers Bloom with Sweets” – Sunagawa Sweet Road –, announced on December 15, 2015
[Sunagawa City, Hokkaido Prefecture]

The confectionery industry in Sunagawa City developed from people working at coal mines and the largest fertilizer factory in the East eating the sweets. This declaration of support aims to promote attractive sweets, which are loved as Sunagawa Sweets by the city’s citizens and many people visiting Sunagawa.

Declaration of support for Sechu-shohin (snow-related products) from “Shine, snow town, Numata Town” – Snow is the treasure of Numata –, announced on December 15, 2015

By taking advantage of snow, previously considered a nuisance, as a local resource, this declaration of support aims to promote Sechu-shohin making good use of snow and Sechu Rice.
