ANRE and NDF to Hold the 1st International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) are to hold the 1st International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station on April 10 (Sun.) and 11 (Mon.), 2016, in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture.

1. Purpose of the Forum

The decommissioning of Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO's) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is a difficult project that is unprecedented anywhere in the world. In order to proceed smoothly, it is necessary to integrate the knowledge of the world and further develop the human resources responsible for long-term decommissioning, while preventing the damage caused by harmful rumors. Also, it is important to further improve domestic and international understanding of the status of the progress of the decommissioning and the outcomes of research and development that have been conducted by the research institutions and enterprises engaged in decommissioning.

Thus, in the spring of 2016, which marks the fifth year since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident, the 1st International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is to be held in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, jointly organized by ANRE, METI, and the NDF, in cooperation with international agencies and relevant domestic and foreign agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA), and with the participation of domestic and foreign experts, local people, students, and others concerned.

This will be the first international forum in the field of decommissioning, at which prominent experts, students, and local people concerned are to gather.
In addition, side events to be held simultaneously will provide opportunities to promote interaction and develop human resources among those involved in decommissioning, including Japanese companies, overseas companies, and students, by showcasing the efforts for research and development at the various stages of decommissioning activities.
