Seminar on Resource Efficiency and the Circular Economy in Japan and the EU to be held

On February 15 (Mon.), 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation are to jointly hold an open seminar titled “Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy in the EU and Japan.” At this seminar, METI and the EU-Japan Centre are to introduce an outline of the EU’s policies on resource efficiency and the circular economy, make presentations on efforts made in Japan by the public and private sectors, and hold panel discussions on matters such as the directions for cooperation between Japan and the EU.

1. Purpose of the seminar

In Europe in recent years, there have been lively discussions surrounding the topic of resource efficiency and the circular economy. Such discussions go beyond recycling and focus on increases in product life expectancy, the sharing of services, and the shift from the simple sales of products to pay-per-service sales schemes based on the concept of products as a service. It has become clear that this topic is influencing not only “venous industries” including the recycling industry, but also manufacturers as well as service providers that are classified as companies in “arterial industries” and such industries as a whole.

The high level of global interest in this topic became even more evident when it was included in the Leaders’ Declaration following the G7 Summit held in Schloss Elmau in June 2015.

In this context, METI and the EU-Japan Centre decided to hold this seminar on the 15th of February in order to explore and share information on this timely and important topic from the EU and Japanese perspectives, including the potential for EU-Japan cooperation in this field.
