Call for Applicants for the Seventh Robot Awards Five new Minister's awards created besides the METI Minister's award

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Machinery Federation (JMF) will carry out the Seventh Robot Awards in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). METI hereby announces that they will start the call for applicants on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

1. Outline

The Robot Awards is a program for recognizing outstanding robots and other technologies, aiming to facilitate the development of robot technologies and the expanded utilization of robots. Since the establishment of the program in 2006, METI has been presenting the METI Minister’s Award as “the Robot Award”.

As the Seventh Robot Awards is approaching, METI and JMF will create five new Minister’s awards, namely, the MIC, MEXT, MHLW, MAFF, and MLIT Minister’s Awards. Along with this effort, the scope of selection criteria for winners will be greatly expanded.

METI and JMF will open the call for applicants for the Seventh Robot Awards on Thursday, April 28, 2016, and close it on Thursday, June 30, 2016. After closing the invitation, they will examine the applicants’ robots, finalize the winners of the awards in the fall of 2016, and hold a commendation ceremony at Tokyo Big Sight on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

In addition, the effort for creating the five new awards and expanding the scope of winners is based on Japan’s initiatives for realizing the target of expanding the robot awards (Section 7, Chapter 1, Part II) set in the New Robot Strategy, which was decided by the Japan Economic Revitalization Headquarters on February 10, 2015.
