Joint Press Release with the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Japan Signed a Cooperation Document with the UAE Space Agency in the Field of Space

On May 13, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Cabinet Office (CAO) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) jointly concluded a cooperation document with the Space Agency of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the field of space. At the signing ceremony, the cooperation document was signed by METI State Minister Yosuke Takagi, MEXT State Minister Tsutomu Tomioka, CAO Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yasuyuki Sakai, and H.E Dr. Khalifa Mohammed Thani Al-Romaithi, Chairman, Space Agency, UAE.

1. Background and objectives

Since the establishment of the Space Agency in 2014, the UAE has been rapidly strengthening the efforts for space utilization and development, such as those for promoting a Mars exploration project in 2021, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national foundation.

In March 2016, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. received an order for launching a Mars exploration vehicle for the UAE. While this has triggered the start to Japan-UAE cooperation in the field of space, the government of Japan decided to conclude a cooperation document with the UAE government to further fortify such cooperation in the field.

2. Key points of the document

The cooperation document affirms that METI, CAO, MEXT and the UAE Space Agency will facilitate the exchange and cooperation in research and development, fostering human resources and developing industries in the field of space.
