Announcement of the 2016 Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection METI & TSE have chosen 26 listed companies implementing a Competitive IT Strategy to enhance corporate value

Since FY2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have jointly chosen the Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection as part of efforts to promote strategic IT utilization by Japanese companies. Under this program, METI and the TSE select and publicize companies that are attractive to investors who prioritize improvement in corporate value from a long-term perspective, with the aim of encouraging businesses to implement a Competitive IT Strategy.

The 26 companies selected for inclusion in the 2016 Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection were announced today, becoming the second group of companies to be part of this program.

1. Outline of the Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection

The companies that feature in the Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection have been selected in each industry category from among all enterprises listed on the TSE. METI and the TSE select and publicize those companies that are actively using IT to achieve business innovation and improve earnings and productivity, as a means of increasing medium- to long-term corporate value and strengthening competitiveness.

Rapid advances in IT are transforming industrial structures and business models at an unprecedented pace. For Japanese companies to succeed in international competition amid this environment, it is not enough to engage in IT investment solely for the purpose of increasing the efficiency and convenience of internal operations, as has been the case until now; strategic and competitive IT investment that will increase medium- to long-term corporate value and bolster competitiveness is also vital.

METI conducted a survey of all TSE-listed companies, entitled the “2016 Survey of Competitive IT Strategies,” and assigned scores to the responses in the following five areas. It also screened the companies on the basis of their financial situation to narrow down the field to the final list of 26 companies.

  1. Use of IT to increase corporate value in management policies and plans
  2. Strategic use of IT to increase corporate value
  3. Systems and personnel for promoting a Competitive IT Strategy
  4. Fundamental initiatives supporting the Competitive IT Strategy
  5. Initiatives focused on evaluating and improving IT investment to increase corporate value
  • Selection criteria
    1. Questionnaire response score above a specified level
    2. Average ROE for the last three years above the industry average
