METI Started to Receive Proposals on Local IoT Acceleration Labs

On June 10, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the IoT Acceleration Lab began receiving proposals for local IoT acceleration labs from the public. We will select initiatives which aim to create IoT projects in local areas as local “IoT acceleration labs” to support the establishment of IoT business startups through such local efforts.

1. Outline

Advancements in IoT, big data and AI, etc. have been changing society and industry in drastic ways, and new services utilizing various types of data can start to be created consistently. To address these circumstances, the IoT Acceleration Lab (chaired by Mr. Kazuhiko Toyama, Representative Director and CEO of the Industrial Growth Platform, Inc.) was established under government-industry-academia collaboration. The lab selects and explores individual IoT projects and provides them with comprehensive support in the form of corporate collaboration, funding and regulations, while making efforts for environmental development such as through regulatory reform and the creation of systems, with the aim of society-wide implementation of IoT.

In order to expand these efforts to local areas and support regional initiatives for creating IoT projects, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab jointly select local “IoT acceleration labs” and provide the following support upon request:

  1. Granting the right to use the “Local IoT Acceleration Lab” logo
  2. Providing information to lab members through such means as circulating mail magazines and holding events
  3. Dispatching mentors who can assist the creation and development of local projects and companies

2. Eligible entities
