Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology First Meeting of the Council of Industry-Academia-Government Dialogues for the Promotion of Innovation to be Held

Aiming to promote innovation in the industry, academia and government sectors, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) decided to establish a Council of Industry-Academia-Government Dialogues for the Promotion of Innovation to provide opportunities for people and officials from the sectors to have dialogues. The council will hold the first meeting on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.

1. Purpose

In light of the goal set in the Japan Revitalization Strategy 2016, which was decided by the Cabinet on June 2, 2016, and aiming to promote innovation in the industry, academia and government sectors, METI and MEXT will jointly establish the council to provide opportunities for people and officials from the sectors to have dialogues. To this end, through dialogues among the sectors, the council will focus on: approaches for deepening inter-organizational collaboration among the sectors; specific actions needed to carry out and realize the approaches; and other initiatives, and it will discuss the roles and concrete measures required from the respective sectors.

2. Outline of the first meeting

Mr. Takeshi Uchiyamada, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Toyota Motor Corporation
Dr. Makoto Gonokami, President, Tokyo University, and 14 other members from the university
Mr. Hiroyuki Suematsu, Director-General, Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau, METI
Mr. Yutaka Tokiwa, Director-General, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT
Mr. Yoichi Ito, Director-General, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, MEXT, and other officials

At the first meeting, participants will discuss issues to be studied (draft) for formulating the guidelines for fortifying joint research through the industry-academia-government collaboration (tentative title). Formulating the guidelines is a goal set in the Japan Revitalization Strategy 2016 and is scheduled to be achieved by the fall of 2016.
