Joint Statement on Japan-Philippines Industrial Cooperation Initiatives Issued

On October 26, 2016, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Ramon M. Lopez, Secretary of Department of Trade and Industry, the Philippines, and issued a Joint Statement on Japan-Philippines Industrial Cooperation Initiatives. Under the Statement, Japan and the Philippines will further promote industrial cooperation.

1. Background

 The government of Japan and the Duterte administration, newly inaugurated in 2016, issued the Statement to promote Japan-Philippines industrial cooperation far beyond previous levels, under the leadership exerted by Minister Seko and Secretary Lopez.

 2. Outline of the Statement

The initiative will further promote bilateral cooperation in a variety of fields, including the automobile industry and other manufacturing industries, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), services, business environment, and human resource development.

Specifically, both countries will cooperate in the following efforts:

  • They will discuss the details of a Philippines’ industrial development vision, a collection of policies defining both the industries and the future directions of initiatives on which the Philippines will focus and will formulate these policies.
  • In 2017, a milestone year marking the 50th anniversary since the foundation of ASEAN, Japan will host the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Roadshow in the spring, with the kind cooperation of Secretary Lopez, a co-chair with Japan at the AEM-METI consultation meeting, aiming to contribute to the development of ASEAN.
