IoT Acceleration Lab Started Calling for New Projects for the Third IoT Lab Selection Public-private joint effort for supporting outstanding IoT projects

On November 1, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and IoT Acceleration Lab started calling for new projects for the third IoT Lab Selection as a public-private joint effort for supporting outstanding IoT projects.

1. Outline

With the advent of IoT, big data and AI, industries and society as a whole are seeing significant changes all over the world. In response to this situation, it is necessary for Japan, as well as other countries, to create new IoT business models, uncover and develop IoT platform creators, and use them as a driving force for new growth.

To achieve these goals, the IoT Acceleration Lab will collaborate with government-related organizations, financial institutions, venture capital businesses and other entities, and provide financial and mentoring support and support for regulatory reforms and standardization for outstanding IoT projects selected for their growth potential, leadership, scalability and commitment to society.

2. Targets for support

Projects involving business utilizing IoT, big data and AI, including the development and demonstrations of software, hardware prototypes and R&D efforts

Starting with this call, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab decided to add two new categories: cross-sectoral platforms and revitalization of regional economies.

Cross-sectoral platforms category

This category targets projects in which platforms are created through the development of fundamental technologies or systems for businesses that utilize IoT, big data or AI in a broad range of fields and not limited to any particular field.

Revitalization of regional economies category

This category targets projects connected to activities under any Local IoT Acceleration Lab program or to efforts of municipalities or projects closely related to local industries, in which IoT, big data or AI are utilized which particularly contribute to solving regional challenges and revitalizing regional economies.

3. Invitation period

 From Tuesday, November 1 to 12:00 p.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016

6. Remarks

METI and IoT Acceleration Lab continue to call for new projects under the Local IoT Acceleration Lab program.
