METI State Minister Takagi Visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

From November 4 to 8, 2016, Mr. Yosuke Takagi, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During his stay, he attended the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) and also held meetings with dignitaries of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the UAE, and other countries.

1. Attending the ADIPEC

State Minister Takagi attended the ADIPEC, positioned as one of the world’s largest exhibitions and conferences in the petroleum and natural gas industries. Taking this opportunity, he held meetings with dignitaries of Abu Dhabi and both sides agreed to further promote cooperation in a broad range of areas including energy.

At the venue, he also exchanged opinions with H.E. Mr. Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, OPEC Secretary General, concerning the trends in global petroleum markets and also with H.E. Dr. Mohammed Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, Qatar, and H.E. Mr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Rumhi, Minister of Oil and Gas, Oman, concerning cooperation in the field of energy and the current situation in the Middle East.

2. Meetings with dignitaries of Abu Dhabi, the UAE

1) H.E. Mr. Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, the UAE (a member of the royal family)

At the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Mansur, State Minister Takagi encouraged Abu Dhabi to support the renewal of the oil concessions held by Japanese companies in Abu Dhabi, and exchanged opinions concerning the importance of cooperation between Japan and Abu Dhabi in a wide range of areas including energy, industry, investment, and cutting-edge technology. Both sides agreed to make efforts toward further progress in such cooperative relations.

2) Meeting with H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State and CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)

At the meeting with Minister Jaber, State Minister Takagi confirmed the importance of a stable supply of crude oil and human resources development in the field of petroleum and encouraged Abu Dhabi to support the renewal of the oil concessions owned by Japanese companies in Abu Dhabi. In addition, both sides exchanged opinions on the enhancement of cooperation in certain fields, such as cutting-edge technology, aiming to further develop the cooperative relationship between the two countries, which have been enjoying mutually-beneficial relations in the energy field.

3) H.E. Mr. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy

Aiming at reinforcing bilateral relations, State Minister Takagi exchanged views with Minister Mazrouei, toward the further promotion of a partnership in a broad range of areas with energy cooperation as its core. State Minister Takagi also encouraged Abu Dhabi to support the renewal of the oil concessions owned by Japanese companies in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, both sides exchanged views concerning the trends in global petroleum markets.

4) H.E. Mr. Hamad Mubarak Al Shamsi, Secretary General, the Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC)

At the meeting with Secretary General Shamsi, State Minister Takagi confirmed the importance of stable supply of crude oil and bilateral cooperation in the field of petroleum, and encouraged Abu Dhabi to support the renewal of the oil concessions owned by Japanese companies in Abu Dhabi. In addition, both sides exchanged views concerning the situation in the Middle East and also discussed the importance of the UAE as a bridge connecting Japan and African nations.

5) Mr. Rex W. Tillerson, CEO, Exxon Mobil Corporation

Both sides discussed the current situation and challenges in the joint projects with Japanese companies, now undertaken in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, and the rest of the world, and showed their expectation that both sides will continue to maintain and develop the inter-companies’ harmonious cooperative relationship. In addition, both sides discussed the trends in global petroleum markets.

3. Exchanging views with stakeholders of Japanese-affiliated companies in Abu Dhabi, the UAE

Taking the opportunity of his visit to Abu Dhabi, the UAE, State Minister Takagi held a meeting with people from Japanese-affiliated companies developing business in the country and exchanged views on the current business states, future perspectives and other issues.

4. Attending a signing ceremony concerning an agreement on cooperation in medical schools between Hokkaido University and United Arab Emirates University
