Power Sector Action Plan for the Philippines Compiled
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled a Power Sector Action Plan for the Philippines (“Power Sector Action Plan in the Philippines”) and on March 27, 2017, directly handed it to the government of the Philippines at the first meeting of the Japan-Philippines Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation and Infrastructure.
1. Background
As one of the most dramatically growing economies in Asia, the Philippines is now facing an increase in electricity demand, and therefore needs to ensure the capacity to supply sufficient electricity to satisfy expected needs.
At the same time, the country faces challenges in the power sector, such as higher electricity tariff than those in other Asian countries and a low electrification rate in regional areas, such as in Mindanao.
To address this situation, at the Japan-Philippines summit meeting in January 2017, Prime Minister Abe stated that Japan will prepare an action plan for the power sector. In response, METI compiled such a plan, and on March 27, 2017, directly handed it to the government of the Philippines at the first meeting of the Japan-Philippines Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation and Infrastructure.
2. Summary of the action plan
The action plan aims to introduce and disseminate high quality electric power infrastructures in all regions across the Philippines, thereby solving challenges that the Philippines is facing in the electricity sector.
METI and the government of the Philippines will jointly and smoothly implement the details of the action plan.
