The IoT Acceleration Lab Will Hold Events Titled the “Fifth IoT Lab Connection” and “HR-Solution Contest”

On May 10, 2017, the IoT Acceleration Lab will start a call for applicants for two events titled the “Fifth IoT Lab Connection” and “HR-Solution Contest” featuring theme-based project organization and business collaboration among companies.

In addition, on July 25 (Tue.), 2017, the IoT Acceleration Lab will hold a business matching event for the IoT Lab Connection and a final examination for the HR-Solution Contest, based on the results of the call.

1. Purpose

With the technological advent of IoT, AI, and big data, industrial and societal structures are seeing significant changes. In response to this situation, the IoT Acceleration Lab aims to create advanced projects utilizing IoT and achieve public implementation of such projects in Japan. To this end, it has been undertaking feasibility studies and related efforts, including reviewing regulations and systems necessary for the implementation and completion of actual demonstration projects, and the creation of new cross-industry regulations to accelerate the development of the environment surrounding IoT and other related technologies.

These efforts have steadily been producing new business in which IoT, AI and big data are utilized. To establish an IoT ecosystem in Japan, the IoT Acceleration Lab will continue to engage in new activities.

2. Outline of the project

As the first activity in FY2017, the IoT Acceleration Lab will hold two events titled “Fifth IoT Lab Connection” and “HR-Solution Contest” in collaboration with a private association and other entities in addition to the cooperative organizations from previous events.

1) Fifth IoT Lab Connection (business matching events)

At the previous events, the IoT Acceleration Lab held business matching events for individual industrial fields. At the Fifth IoT Lab Connection, it will hold business matching events categorized by purpose (challenge), focusing on two themes: [i] working style reforms, and [ii] sharing economy.
At the event, the IoT Acceleration Lab will hold events between companies with specific problems and vendors that provide solutions to those problems; or between vendors that are interested in affiliation and collaboration with other vendors. Moreover, these matching events will bring together IoT Acceleration Lab member companies, municipalities, law firms and other associations with business models, technologies and services, and other characteristics related to the two themes. These events will also provide municipalities with free consulting services with lawyers to help such municipalities overcome obstacles, meet public needs and resolve bottlenecks.

2) HR-Solution Contest working style reforms x technologies

With the dramatic changes in industrial structures brought about by the fourth industrial revolution, Japan is facing an era where human resources themselves are the sources of business competitiveness rather than materials and capital. Along with this trend, working styles are changing. In this situation, it is urgent for companies to implement efforts for working style reforms.

Against this backdrop, a new type of service known as “HR technology” is spreading quickly among businesses. This technology is expected to contribute to companies in improving HR capabilities through: utilization of AI for personnel evaluations and recruitment as well as human resource development, labor management using IoT, human resource operation using big data, and also in improving working styles through utilization of wearable and other devices.

In this context, the IoT Acceleration Lab decided to hold the HR-Solutions Contest, in collaboration with HR Learning Technology & Big Data Analytics Consortium (LeBAC), to promote working style reforms through utilization of IoT and other cutting-edge technologies. In the HR-Solutions Contest, the IoT Acceleration Lab will call for outstanding ideas and solutions to overcome many obstacles that companies are facing in personnel and labor areas. Contest finalists will be required to make final presentations at an event on July 25 (Tue.), 2017, in front of a large group of business owners, people in charge of personnel, and venture capital businesses, and other stakeholders attending the event.

METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab are looking forward to receiving your application.
