Results of the Survey on Wages in the IT-related Industry Compiled

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA), conducted a questionnaire survey concerning wages of IT professionals, who are expected to play significant roles in the future growth of Japanese industry. The survey targeted both IT-related companies and IT professionals. METI and IPA analyzed the results and compiled them into a report.

Background and awareness

With the current progress in technological innovation known as the 4th Industrial Revolution, IT professionals are increasingly needed in all industries, and the need is not limited to the IT-related industry. However, a shortage of such professionals is forecasted as the population decreases into the future. Competition for hiring the best IT professionals is intensifying across industries and around the globe. In order to succeed in this competition, methods of evaluating, determining favorable employment conditions and best use of IT professionals are key factors.

Against this backdrop, METI conducted this survey with the aim of ascertaining the current status and problems of wage systems and recruitment in the IT-related industries for future deliberations on related governmental policies and measures.

  • To ascertain how current wage levels of IT professionals relate to specific attributes, such as business type, job type, and skill level, etc.
  • To ascertain factors prioritized by IT-related companies in deciding wage systems and wages of individual professionals
  • To ascertain the current status and recruitment problems of IT-related companies
  • To ascertain the work and study hours of IT professionals, and to analyze the results by attribute
