1.Outline of the Award for Academic Startups 2017

Since its inauguration in FY2014, the Award for Academic Startups program has been honoring promising university-oriented startups that are selected from venture businesses that make use of the research developed by universities and other institutions (colleges of technology, research and development institutions under the national government and local governments, national research and development agencies, and non-profit corporations including public interest corporations). This program also honors universities, companies and other entities that have made particular contributions to the growth of such startups.

METI and MEXT called for applicants for the FY2017 program from April 26 (Wed.) to June 5 (Mon.), 2017, and 53 entities applied. In response, the Screening Committee of external experts for the Award for Academic Startups examined application documents and held interviews with the applicants. Following this screening, METI chose six university-oriented venture businesses and the universities and companies supporting them ("supporting universities, etc.") as winners.
